Is It Safe to Buy an Engagement Ring Online in Australia?
The short answer: yes, if you check six things before you pay. Is the business real and Australian? Is the stone described with its origin and a report number you can verify? Is the metal solid and its purity stated? Are returns, resizing and warranty in writing? Does checkout take secure payment? Do you know your Australian Consumer Law rights? Each takes a few minutes, and a trustworthy jeweller makes every one of them easy.
How do I check that an online jeweller is a real Australian business?
Search the business on ABN Lookup, the free public Australian Business Register. Check that the ABN is active and that the entity matches the business you're buying from. A real jeweller also publishes a physical address and a phone number that someone answers. Divara Jewellery is Divara Jewellery Pty Ltd, ABN 85 677 337 192, with an office at Suite 316/227 Collins St, Melbourne, on 0449 077 184.
How do I verify a diamond grading report?
- Ask for the report number before you buy. Larger stones usually carry a laboratory report from IGI or GIA, and many have the same number laser-inscribed on the girdle.
- Enter the number on the laboratory's own website: GIA's Report Check, or the report verification on igi.org. Never rely on a PDF or a link the seller sends you.
- Match the details: carat weight, measurements, shape, colour and clarity. For a lab-grown diamond, the report should state that it is laboratory-grown.
- When the ring arrives, a jeweller with a 10x loupe can read the girdle inscription and confirm it matches the report.
At Divara, lab-grown diamond jewellery above 1 carat total weight comes with an IGI certificate. Our IGI guide explains how to read one.
What should the product listing tell me?
- The stone's origin, up front: "lab-grown diamond", "natural diamond" or "moissanite", never just "diamond" for a lab-grown stone.
- Carat weight: whether it is the centre stone or the total weight, and the stone's shape.
- The metal and its purity: for example 9K, 14K or 18K solid gold, or platinum 950, as opposed to plated or vermeil.
- The lead time: for made-to-order pieces, how long crafting takes before dispatch.
- The full price in AUD, including delivery.
What are my rights if something goes wrong?
Under the Australian Consumer Law, products must be of acceptable quality, match their description and be fit for purpose. If a ring has a major fault, you can choose a refund or replacement; a minor fault can be repaired. These guarantees apply whatever a store's policy says (ACCC). Change-of-mind returns are not required by law, so read the store's own policy. Made-to-order and resized pieces are usually excluded.
How should I pay online for an engagement ring?
Pay through the jeweller's secure checkout by credit card or a digital wallet. Card payments can be disputed with your bank if goods never arrive. Be wary of any seller who asks for a bank transfer, money order, gift card or cryptocurrency. Scamwatch flags these payment methods as a common sign of an online shopping scam.
What are the red flags?
- No ABN, no physical address, or an address that doesn't match the business register
- "Diamond" with no mention of whether it is lab-grown or natural
- Natural-diamond prices far below every other jeweller's
- No grading report number, or one you can only see as a PDF
- Pressure to decide today, or payment only by bank transfer
- No written returns, resizing or warranty terms
